Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Edo State Governor, visited the family of late Uwaila Omozuwa, a University of Benin 100 Level Microbiology student who was gruesomely killed in a church in 2020.
Omozuwa’s death last year sparked national outcry after her body was discovered inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God church in Edo state, where she had been raped.
Governor Obaseki said during his visit to the family:
”Uwaila did not die in vain. The federal and state governments have taken stiffer actions against gender-based violence. We are here to continue to celebrate her life as we continue to fight against gender-based violence.
Her death was the reason for the establishment of gender-based violence committee. The Edo State Government has put mechanisms in place to fight gender-based violence-related offenses.
Her death led to the promulgation of the Violence Against Persons (VAP) law in the state and people are now aware of the crime.”
In other news, a Nigerian police officer identified as Amid Yuletide has swam against the unfavourable perception of Nigerian cops during the holiday season.
The police officer was seen in a viral video presenting bags of rice to a tricyclist and his passengers after stopping them for a check: a gesture that is thought to be nearly unthinkable in the country.
His actions are comparable to those of his colleague, who a few days ago handed a tricyclist and his passengers a sum of 5,000 Naira.
Many Nigerians have expressed their gratitude to the officer, while others have expressed concern about the emerging practice among the country’s police personnel over the Christmas season.
